In this week’s episode, we explore the cryptic and chaotic world of Opium, the record label founded by Playboi Carti in 2019 that has since evolved into a full-blown subculture of chronically online and fashionably darksided super-fans.
I went to a county fair on 4th of July and saw a group high schoolers all wearing different variations of sp5der hoodies and baggy jeans almost like a K-pop group - similar vibes but not matching. They were walking by me in groups of 2s and 3s and they literally just kept appearing like endless clowns coming out of a clown car 😭 maybe like 20 high schoolers wearing opium outfits like they were brockhampton or stg
HAHAHAH wait this clown car image is so funny to me ... It is true that you never just see one rogue Opium teen in the wild, they have strength in numbers! But someone should tell them it enhances one's mysterious loner aura to go solo every now and then ...
Re the Carti stance on the Kendrick n Drake beef, Carti is defo pro-Kendrick, he featured Kendrick 3x on MUSIC. I think it's cute when Kendrick says 'Carti my evil twin'. Also BACKD00R is such a good song i fear.
Wait THANK YOU this is so good to know!! I think I had vague memories of this beef: https://x.com/AkademiksTV/status/1901023974307623132 lol the ghost of Luther Vandross being caught in the middle of all this ... can't they let unc rest in peace ...
the rap crisis conversation is so real- i think similar to most subcultures that have been absolutely subsumed by corporate money and influence. i think there's a case study on the environment of hip-hop's original seed, its rebellious infancy and then late 20s, all the while being globally commodified and now deliverable as formula. like it's no longer transgressive or anti-establishment to like hip-hop and that makes it hard for old heads and young artists alike
