This week, we herald the coming of the Pastel Grunge Revival, a new wave of candy-colored femininity characterized by an eclectic and deliberately unsettling fusion of childlike innocence and overt sensuality.
Looking at the image board this seems closer to a pastel reincarnation of scene. Pastel grunge had a very different vibe, beanies, tattoo chokers, platform shoes.
Yes there are some elements (the hair and lips) but this image is what I think of pastel grunge
This makes sense!! I feel like old pastel grunge was like 80% grunge 20% pastel whereas this revival has the ratio reversed … also I hate the old pastel grunge color scheme lol why was it so limited to super digital bright lavender/pink … another important development with this style that makes it feel distinct from these “alternative” subcultures is that the makeup/beauty dimension is super minimal and naturalistic. I think if these girls were doing like e-girl makeup it would read super differently, that’s prob why it didn’t occur to me to think of scene!!
this episode is basically my entire research niche!! re: the whole dead stock clothes being recycled through the global south and back, i researched that very thing for my thesis in undergrad (including alll the pulga/ santee alley/ postmodern dupes linkages) and it’s totally legit. yall’s intuition is spot-on :-,) always adore an LA centric episode
og american apparel was running at full speed, along with the rise of local streetwear like the hundreds and the proliferation of h&ms and urban outfitters, those places werent doing collabs yet or had cool in-house designers so it was a lot of colors, solids, patterns, etc etc. appreciate all of you very much and happy new year!
