In this episode, superstar model-actress-writer and certified Tumblr icon Hari Nef joins us to discuss the electric energy of the mid-2010s New York fashion scene— VFILES, Hood by Air, Eckhaus Latta, and more— and the collision of early online content and the fashion industry that birthed some of the most brilliant creative personae of our generation.
massive episode for someone like me who cut their teeth online on tumblr during this time…also hari really pinpointed how kids rapidly learnt the vocabulary to describe their marginalisation, and before long, were constantly engaged in these digital knife fights over who did what problematic behaviour, who still followed who after the callout post, who didn’t check their privilege…..wonder how urfaveisproblematic is doing today LOL..but yeah wonderful episode!! hari is so insightful and hilarious, she was always on our moodboards in the day
This was a really good read, and what a coincidence, I’ve often wondered about them after tumblr!! it truly fatigued both posters and readers to always have this arm stretched, pointing out ‘the wrong’ in fear of being (or being accused of being) in ‘the wrong’, so i’m glad that at least kids have put the knives down a little. hope liat has a wayyy chiller life online if she still logs on x
almost finished with the episode before I have to break for a meeting but THIS IS SO GOOD. so excited to hear more from Hari about unpacking the co-option of identity.
this episode is so good… as an observer who just wanted to reblog aesthetics i ended up leaving tumblr because of all the infighting and cancellations and screenshots and mic drops. then everyone migrated to twitter and now i can’t click on a tweet without immediately seeing 3 nazi replies. it sucks so bad.
Zoe Latta was my machine knitting teacher at RISD. I admired her funky/androgynous personal style, and how directly it translated in her work. I stan with this excellent pop song by Maddie Jay, aptly named "Eckhaus Latta":
ghettogothik/dis/tri angle records/hippos in tanks was a bit before my time but in high school i would love reading their archives abt ryan trecartin and all that it rly hits like nothing else
